Fordham or UC San Diego for biology: which is better for an undergraduate biology major?

UC San Diego is usually the stronger academic environment for an undergraduate biology major, especially if you want a campus built around life sciences, large-scale research, and preparation for PhD or MD paths. Biology is one of UCSD’s signature areas, with major strengths tied to its School of Biological Sciences, nearby medical and biotech ecosystem, and access to major research institutes in La Jolla. For a student who wants depth in biology options and a very science-heavy campus culture, UCSD has a clear edge.

UCSD fits students who want to be surrounded by lots of biology, neuroscience, public health, and biotech activity every day. You would have access to a broad range of upper-level courses and subfields, and the university’s research footprint is unusually strong for undergraduates who are proactive enough to pursue labs. Being next to places like Scripps and a dense biotech cluster can matter a lot if you want lab experience, internships, or exposure to translational science.

Fordham makes more sense for a student who wants a smaller-feeling academic experience, more direct faculty interaction, and a stronger liberal arts balance alongside biology. Its biology program can absolutely prepare students for med school, and being in New York can help with hospital volunteering, shadowing, and clinical exposure. For grad school or med school placement, either school can work, but the paths look different.
