Fordham vs BU for pre-law: which is better overall?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location-driven opportunity versus campus feel and cost structure. Fordham gives you direct access to New York’s legal world, with strong proximity to courts, firms, nonprofits, and policy organizations, especially from Lincoln Center. Boston University offers a larger research-university environment in another major legal market, but it usually feels less specifically tied to the legal ecosystem day to day than Fordham does.

For pre-law, Fordham has a real edge in how naturally the city and the university connect to law-related internships during the school year. Its ties to Fordham Law, especially at Lincoln Center, can make guest speakers, advising, and law-adjacent student opportunities feel more immediate. If you are the kind of student who wants to test legal interests early through internships, shadowing, public service, or policy work, Fordham is often easier to turn into a practical pre-law launchpad.

BU is still a strong option, especially if you want a broader university with lots of academic flexibility, strong social sciences and humanities, and a big-school feel. It can be a very good place for future law applicants because law schools care much more about GPA, writing ability, analytical thinking, and sustained involvement than about a formal pre-law track. BU may appeal more if you want a wider range of non-law academic pathways while keeping law school open.

One caution is that neither school is worth stretching too far financially for pre-law, because law school itself is expensive. If one is meaningfully cheaper, that matters a lot.
