University of Richmond vs Carnegie Mellon for computer science: how do they compare academically and for internships?
I’m trying to decide between these two schools for computer science and I keep seeing very different impressions of them. I know Carnegie Mellon is known for CS, but I also like the idea of a smaller school like Richmond.

Carnegie Mellon has the clear edge for computer science, especially if academics in CS depth and internship access are the main factors. Its School of Computer Science is one of the most established in the country, the course selection is much broader, and the recruiting ecosystem around tech is much stronger. University of Richmond can offer a more intimate undergraduate environment, but it is not comparable to CMU in the scale or intensity of CS.

As a smaller liberal arts focused university, it can be easier to build close relationships with professors and get individualized attention without competing with as many highly technical peers. CMU support exists too, but the environment is more demanding and the student body in CS is exceptionally strong, so some students experience that as energizing while others find it stressful.
On internships, CMU is in a different tier. Employer recognition in tech is immediate, major companies recruit there consistently, and the alumni network in software and related fields is unusually deep. Pittsburgh also has a meaningful tech and robotics presence, and CMU students benefit from that local ecosystem on top of national recruiting.
Richmond students can still get internships, but they usually need to be more proactive and may have fewer built-in pipelines to large tech employers. Richmond is better known overall for business, leadership, and liberal arts than for sending large numbers of students into top CS recruiting channels.
