Oregon vs. Washington: Which state is better for studying computer science in college?

Washington has the edge for studying computer science, mainly because it combines stronger flagship CS options with a deeper tech internship market. The University of Washington is one of the most respected computer science destinations in the country, and the Seattle area gives students unusually direct access to major tech employers, startups, and research labs. Across the state, that concentration makes it easier to find internships, part-time technical work, and industry networking during the school year.

The biggest academic differentiator is at the top end. UW’s Paul G. Allen School is especially well known in areas like AI, systems, HCI, and machine learning, and Washington State University also offers a solid computer science path with a different campus environment. Oregon has good options, especially Oregon State, which is respected for engineering and has a well-developed CS program, but Washington’s flagship carries more national weight in computer science specifically.

The internship landscape is the other major reason. Seattle is one of the most important tech hubs in the country, so students in Washington are closer to a large volume of software, cloud, gaming, biotech-tech, and startup opportunities during both the summer and the academic year. Oregon has a smaller tech scene by comparison. Portland does offer opportunities, and Oregon State students do benefit from employer connections, but the density and range are not as strong as what Washington students can tap into.

One important caveat is access within the major. At UW, computer science can be very competitive to enter, so applicants need to look closely at direct admission and departmental policies.
