UCLA tends to feel more residential, school-spirited, and socially concentrated on campus, while the University of Maryland usually has a bigger Big Ten, East Coast, state-school energy with more of a traditional college-town rhythm. At UCLA, a large share of student life runs through the Hill, Westwood, and the campus itself, so the social scene often feels dense and visible day to day. At Maryland, sports culture, clubs, and friend groups are very active too, but the atmosphere is often shaped more by the broader state flagship vibe and by proximity to Washington, DC.

One big difference is how students use the area around campus.
