Is the University of Maryland or University of Michigan worth the cost for an out-of-state student?

The biggest practical tradeoff is price versus breadth of payoff: Michigan usually offers a stronger national brand, deeper alumni reach, and more across-the-board recruiting pull, while Maryland can be the smarter financial decision if the cost gap is large. For an out-of-state student, that gap matters a lot because both are public universities and neither is cheap without aid. In many fields, Maryland is strong enough that paying substantially more for Michigan will not automatically produce a better return.

Michigan does tend to carry more weight nationally, especially in business, engineering, economics, public policy, and some social sciences. Its alumni network is enormous and employers across the country know it immediately, which can make internships, recruiting, and mobility easier. That advantage is most meaningful if you want a highly national job search, plan to enter a field where school reputation matters more, or expect to use large-scale campus recruiting.

Maryland’s value comes from being very solid academically while often costing less. It has real advantages in computer science, engineering, government-related fields, and anything connected to the D.C. area. Proximity to Washington creates access to internships, federal agencies, research, and policy work that are not easy to replicate elsewhere, so for some majors Maryland’s opportunity set is better than people assume.

The price difference is what should drive the decision. If Michigan costs only a little more and your major is one where its network and recruiting strength are likely to matter, the extra cost can be justified. If Michigan is tens of thousands more per year, Maryland is usually the better value unless your family can absorb that difference comfortably without loans.
