Which is better for city life: UNC Chapel Hill or Michigan State?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UNC gives you easier access to a lively college town with a built-in social scene, while Michigan State sits in a larger metro area but its campus itself feels more self-contained and less urban block by block. Day to day, UNC-Chapel Hill usually feels more connected to walkable restaurants, coffee shops, Franklin Street, and nearby Durham and Raleigh options. Michigan State has access to East Lansing and the Lansing area, but the immediate atmosphere is more classic Big Ten campus than true city living.

If your definition of city life is being able to step off campus and quickly reach lots of food spots, bars, shops, and regular off-campus activity on foot, UNC has the edge. Chapel Hill is not a big city, but the town blends closely with campus, so students often spend time on Franklin Street and in nearby neighborhoods without needing much planning. UNC also benefits from the Triangle area, which means more concerts, internships, and events are available within a reasonable distance.

Michigan State gives you more regional size around it, but campus life is more spread out and insulated. East Lansing has student-oriented spots and Lansing adds more options, yet it does not usually read as especially urban in the way students often mean when they say they want a city feel. Public transportation exists around both schools, but neither experience is like living at a place embedded directly in a major dense city.

So for actual day-to-day feel, UNC Chapel Hill is probably the better pick for what you described. It is still a college town, not an urban campus, but it tends to feel more active, walkable, and immediately connected to off-campus life than Michigan State.
