Should I choose UVA or Carnegie Mellon for data science?

I’m trying to decide between UVA and Carnegie Mellon for college, and I’m interested in studying data science. Both seem like strong options, but I’m not sure how to compare them for this major.

I want to understand which school is generally the better choice for a student who wants to build a career in data science.

The biggest practical tradeoff is breadth and balance at UVA versus intensity and technical specialization at Carnegie Mellon. For data science specifically, Carnegie Mellon has a deeper computer science and machine learning ecosystem, more built-in access to advanced technical research, and a campus culture that is heavily oriented toward quantitative fields. UVA is still a strong option, but it is more likely to give you a broader undergraduate experience rather than the same level of concentrated technical depth.

For a student aiming squarely at data science, CMU usually carries more weight because of its strength in computer science, statistics, AI, and applied math all at once. That matters not just for coursework, but for the kinds of labs, faculty projects, and recruiting pipelines you are around every day.

UVA’s advantage is that it can offer more flexibility if your interests shift across data science, economics, public policy, business, or interdisciplinary applications. If you want to pair data work with a less narrowly technical college experience, UVA can be appealing. It also tends to feel less relentlessly intense than CMU, which is worth taking seriously because burnout can affect how much you actually get out of a strong program.

Career-wise, both can get you to good outcomes, but CMU has the clearer edge if your goal is highly technical data science work, especially roles tied to machine learning, software, or research-heavy analytics. UVA can absolutely lead to strong placements too, though students may need to be a bit more proactive in stitching together the same level of technical specialization.

If cost is similar and you are confident you want a rigorous, tech-centered path, I would pick Carnegie Mellon for data science. I would lean toward UVA only if you value a broader campus experience, want more academic flexibility, or suspect your interests may expand beyond the most technical side of the field.
