Arizona State vs Emory for biology: which is better for undergrad pre-med research and biology opportunities?

I’m trying to decide between Arizona State and Emory for biology, and I’m mostly thinking about undergrad research, internships, and prep for pre-med or grad school. Both seem strong in different ways, but I’m not sure how they compare for a biology student specifically.

I want a school where it’s realistic to get involved early and build a strong academic foundation without getting completely lost in the crowd.

The biggest practical tradeoff is access versus concentration: Arizona State offers a huge number of labs, institutes, and options because of its size, while Emory gives you a denser pre-med and biomedical environment tied closely to a major research university and hospital system. For biology with pre-med or grad school in mind, Emory usually has the edge in the depth of nearby clinical and biomedical opportunities, especially through Emory’s medical ecosystem and its Atlanta location. ASU can still be excellent, but you often need to be more proactive in navigating a much larger university.

At Emory, biology students benefit from being in a school where undergraduate teaching, pre-health advising, and research are closely connected to Emory’s medical school, hospitals, and public health resources. Atlanta also adds access to major health and research organizations, which matters for internships, shadowing, and clinical exposure. If you want an environment where pre-med is a central part of campus life and where biomedical research feels especially integrated into the undergraduate experience, Emory is hard to beat.

ASU’s advantage is scale and breadth. There are many research centers, strong life sciences programs, and plenty of professors doing interesting work, so motivated students can absolutely build a strong resume for med school or PhD programs. It may also be easier in some cases to find space in labs early simply because the university is so large, but the tradeoff is that advising and opportunity-finding can feel less centralized, and the student experience can be less personal.

For not getting lost in the crowd, Emory is usually the safer bet. Classes and advising tend to feel more intimate, and the path from coursework to faculty connection to research can be more straightforward. For biology specifically, I’d choose Emory unless ASU is much more affordable or there is a very specific ASU research niche that matches your interests.
