Is James Madison University or Fordham University better for finance careers?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools and finance is the main career path I’m thinking about. Both seem to have business options, but I’m not sure which one has the stronger reputation or better opportunities for breaking into finance after college.

I want to understand which school would generally be the better choice for a student aiming for finance jobs.

The biggest practical tradeoff is location and recruiting access versus cost and campus experience. Fordham puts you in New York City, very close to banks, investment firms, and internships during the school year, which matters a lot in finance because networking and early experience can shape your first job. James Madison University can still place students into finance roles, especially in corporate finance and regional markets, but it does not have the same built-in proximity to Wall Street or the same day-to-day access to NYC employers.

For finance specifically, Fordham usually has the stronger edge. Its Gabelli School of Business is well known, and being in NYC makes it easier to attend employer events, meet alumni, and intern part time during the semester. That kind of access is especially valuable for more competitive paths like investment banking, sales and trading, asset management, and certain high-finance internships.

JMU has a solid business program and a respected undergraduate experience, and many students do very well there. It can be a strong option if you are looking at a more traditional college campus, lower cost, and a broader college-town environment. For finance careers, though, JMU is more likely to require extra hustle for networking and may be strongest for students targeting corporate finance, commercial banking, accounting-related paths, or roles in the Mid-Atlantic region rather than the most NYC-centered finance tracks.

If your main goal is maximizing finance recruiting opportunities, especially in New York, Fordham is the more advantageous pick. JMU becomes more compelling if the price difference is large enough that taking on Fordham would create serious financial strain, because in finance your first job matters, but your debt burden matters too.
