Is James Madison University or NC State harder to get into?

I’m trying to compare these two schools as I build my college list. I keep hearing different things about how selective they are, and I want a simple comparison.

I’m mainly looking for which one is generally considered harder to get into overall.

NC State is generally harder to get into overall than James Madison University. It draws a very large applicant pool, especially for engineering, computer science, and other high-demand majors, and admission can be notably tougher for out-of-state students. JMU is still selective and popular, but in most years it is viewed as less difficult to enter than NC State overall.

At NC State, your intended major can make a real difference, and some programs are much more competitive than the university as a whole. That makes admissions feel less predictable, especially if you are targeting STEM fields.

JMU tends to be a better example of a school where strong grades, a solid curriculum, and a clear overall application can put you in a more comfortable position. It is not a safety for everyone, but it usually does not have the same level of major-by-major selectivity pressure that NC State does. For a broad college list comparison, most students would place NC State in the more selective category and JMU a step below that.

If you are building a balanced list, it makes sense to treat NC State as the tougher admit in this pair, especially if you are out of state or applying to one of its most sought-after majors.
