Is University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign better than University of Iowa for accounting careers?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UIUC gives you a larger, more nationally recognized recruiting platform in business, while Iowa can still place well in accounting but tends to feel more regional and a bit less powerful on employer reach. For accounting specifically, UIUC’s Gies College of Business has a stronger overall brand, deeper Big Four and major-firm visibility, and a very large alumni base in finance and accounting roles. Iowa’s Tippie College of Business is well respected and absolutely capable of leading to a strong accounting career, but UIUC usually carries more weight when people are comparing pure recruiting leverage.

In accounting, school connections matter most at the internship and first-job stage, and UIUC tends to offer more volume. More firms recruit there, the alumni network is broader, and the campus is a bigger target for employers hiring into audit, tax, and advisory. That does not mean Iowa students struggle, but the path at UIUC is often more direct, especially if you want access to large firms across multiple markets rather than mostly the Midwest.

The school name also matters somewhat in accounting, though less than in fields where hiring is highly prestige-driven. Once you have passed CPA-related coursework, built experience, and performed well in internships, your school matters less. But getting that first internship is easier when employers already recruit heavily on campus, and UIUC has an advantage there.

Iowa still makes sense if the cost is meaningfully lower, if you prefer the environment, or if you expect to build your career in places where Tippie has especially strong ties. But if the question is which school is more likely to give you the stronger accounting recruiting setup and broader early-career opportunities, UIUC is the better pick.
