University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs Michigan State for a big school experience

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UIUC often feels more intense and university-centered, while Michigan State tends to feel more spread out, social, and classic Big Ten in a broad, residential way. Both are very large public universities with major school spirit, huge student organizations, packed campuses, and big sports culture.
