Virginia Tech has the stronger school spirit overall. The campus culture there is especially unified around Hokie football, traditions like Enter Sandman at Lane Stadium, and a very visible sense that students, alumni, and the town all rally around the school together. UIUC has plenty of pride too, but it usually feels less all-encompassing day to day.

A big difference is how central athletics are to campus identity. At Virginia Tech, game days are a major event, and football in particular shapes the social atmosphere in a way that is hard to miss even if you are not a huge sports fan. The crowd energy, turnout, and ritual around games create a shared experience that many students describe as one of the defining parts of being there.

Another factor is the overall campus community feel. Virginia Tech has a more tightly knit college-town atmosphere, and that tends to amplify school pride because so much of student life is concentrated around the university. UIUC also has a classic college-town setting in Champaign-Urbana, but it is a much larger campus with a broader mix of academic subcommunities, so spirit can feel more distributed rather than concentrated.
