Auburn or South Carolina for finance: which is the better choice?
I’m a high school senior trying to decide between Auburn and South Carolina for studying finance. I know both schools have business programs, but I’m trying to understand which one is generally the stronger option for finance students.
I’m mostly looking at the overall reputation and whether one school might give me a better path into internships and jobs after graduation.

For finance specifically, South Carolina usually has the clearer edge. Its Darla Moore School of Business has a stronger national reputation in business circles, and that tends to matter for finance recruiting, internship pipelines, and alumni visibility. If your main priority is maximizing access to business-focused employers and a finance-centered network, South Carolina is the school I’d lean toward.
South Carolina makes the most sense for the student who wants a business environment that feels more plugged into finance and corporate recruiting from the start. The Moore School is one of the university’s biggest identity pieces, not just one department among many, so finance students often benefit from a campus culture where business carries a lot of weight. Being in Columbia also helps with access to the state capital, regional employers, and internships during the school year.
Auburn fits the student who wants a strong, well-regarded big-school experience and plans to build a finance path through involvement, networking, and strong grades rather than relying on the business school’s brand alone. Auburn has a loyal alumni base and solid outcomes, especially across the Southeast, and that can absolutely translate into jobs. But in a direct finance comparison, its business reputation is typically broader and less distinctly finance-forward than South Carolina’s.
If cost is meaningfully lower at Auburn or you strongly prefer the campus culture there, Auburn can still work very well, but purely on finance reputation and career access, South Carolina stands out.
