How does Penn State compare to UC San Diego in admissions difficulty?

UC San Diego is harder to get into than Penn State for most applicants. UCSD draws a very large pool of high-achieving students, is one of the more selective campuses in the University of California system, and its review is especially tough for popular majors like computer science, engineering, and biology. Penn State is certainly competitive, but overall it is more accessible, with admissions that vary more by campus, major, and entry term.

One major difference is how each school structures admission. UC San Diego uses a holistic review and evaluates applicants in the UC framework, with strong emphasis on academic performance in rigorous coursework. It does not consider test scores, so grades, course rigor, and the rest of the application carry a lot of weight. Penn State relies more heavily on academic factors too, but its process is typically more straightforward, and some applicants may be admitted to a different campus, summer start, or alternate pathway rather than simply denied.

Another differentiator is applicant competition. UCSD attracts many applicants who are also aiming at highly selective public universities, especially from California, and demand is intense across STEM fields.
