Is University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or Stevens Institute of Technology better for computer science?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list for computer science and keep seeing UIUC and Stevens come up as strong options. I know both have good reputations, but I’m having a hard time figuring out which one is generally considered stronger for CS overall.

I’m mostly looking for a simple comparison of how they stack up for computer science as schools.

UIUC is more widely regarded as the stronger computer science school overall. Its CS program has a deeper national reputation, a larger and more established faculty presence across major CS subfields, and much broader visibility with top tech employers and research circles. For a simple head-to-head on CS strength, UIUC comes out ahead.

One major difference is the scale and depth of the department. UIUC has one of the most prominent standalone CS ecosystems in the country, with extensive course offerings, specialized tracks, research labs, and advanced opportunities across areas like systems, AI, theory, data, and computer engineering-related work. That usually translates into more ways to explore the field in depth and more flexibility if your interests change.

Another differentiator is recruiting reach. UIUC is a very well-known pipeline for major tech companies, quantitative firms, and graduate programs, and its CS name carries a lot of weight nationally. Stevens has solid outcomes too, especially given its location and strong technical focus, but its reputation is not on the same tier as UIUC’s in computer science specifically.

Research environment also separates them. UIUC has a much larger research footprint in CS, which matters even for undergraduates because it often means more labs, more faculty projects, and more academically ambitious peers. Stevens is a respected tech-focused school and can be attractive for students who want a smaller, more contained setting near New York City, but in terms of overall CS stature, UIUC is the one most people would place above it.
