How do financial aid packages compare between the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Tulane University?

Tulane is usually the more generous school on aid, especially if you are not an Illinois resident, because it offers substantial institutional need-based aid and is well known for large merit scholarships, while UIUC is a public flagship whose best pricing advantage is often reserved for in-state students. In practice, many students find UIUC cheaper only when they qualify for Illinois resident tuition or have a specific UIUC scholarship, whereas Tulane more often uses its own funds to reduce the sticker price. That makes the real comparison less about the published cost and more about whether you are in-state for UIUC and how competitive you are for Tulane merit money.

On need-based aid, Tulane typically has more flexibility. As a private university, it can use institutional grants to build packages that are often stronger than what out-of-state students see from public universities. UIUC does provide need-based aid, but public flagships usually have less room to discount heavily for nonresidents, so out-of-state applicants often see a higher net cost there than they hoped.

On merit aid, Tulane again tends to stand out. It has a reputation for offering significant merit awards, including some very large competitive scholarships, and strong applicants often use that as a major part of the affordability equation. UIUC does have merit scholarships, but they are typically less broad-based and less likely to bring the price down dramatically, especially compared with Tulane’s bigger institutional awards.

One important exception is Illinois residency. For an in-state student, UIUC can be very hard to beat on value because the base tuition is much lower than Tulane’s starting price, even before aid.
