Amherst or Notre Dame for finance careers?
I’m trying to decide between Amherst and Notre Dame and I want to keep the option open for finance after college. I know both are strong schools overall, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one tends to place better into finance-related jobs and internships.
I’m interested in hearing how each school’s reputation, alumni network, and recruiting environment might affect someone aiming for investment banking, consulting, or other finance paths.

For finance, Notre Dame usually offers the more direct and visible pipeline, especially if you are thinking about investment banking, consulting, or large corporate finance roles right out of college. Its undergraduate business ecosystem, very active alumni base, and established recruiting culture make it easier to find finance-focused clubs, mentorship, and on-campus employer attention. Amherst can still place extremely well, but it tends to be more of a high-upside liberal arts route where outcomes depend a bit more on how intentionally you build the path.
Amherst fits the student who wants a small, intensely academic setting and is comfortable being more self-directed. Amherst has an excellent reputation on Wall Street and in selective finance circles, and elite firms do know the school well. Its alumni network is smaller than Notre Dame’s, but often very loyal and influential, especially in northeastern finance hubs. If you are the kind of student who will seek out internships early, use the open curriculum well, and network aggressively, Amherst can absolutely lead to top finance outcomes.
For consulting, both schools can work very well, but in somewhat different ways. Notre Dame gives you a broader organized recruiting machine; Amherst gives you the appeal of a top liberal arts education that consulting firms often value for writing, analysis, and discussion-heavy coursework.
If your priority is maximizing straightforward access to finance recruiting infrastructure, Notre Dame has the edge. If you want a liberal arts experience first and are confident you can create your own lane into finance, Amherst remains a very strong option.
