Is Michigan State or Indiana better for finance major recruiting and career outcomes?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both Michigan State and Indiana are on it because they seem solid for business. I want to study finance and eventually go into banking or another corporate finance role.

I’m mostly trying to understand which school is generally stronger for finance recruiting and career placement.

Indiana has the edge for finance recruiting and career outcomes, especially if you are serious about banking or highly competitive front-office finance paths. The Kelley School of Business has a stronger national reputation in finance, a deeper on-campus recruiting pipeline, and well-known finance programs and workshops that are built specifically for placement. Michigan State is a respectable option through Broad, but Indiana is the one that more consistently shows up in conversations about undergraduate finance recruiting.

One big differentiator is the structure of finance recruiting itself. At Indiana, Kelley’s specialized finance ecosystem, including investment banking and capital markets-oriented workshops, gives students a more direct runway into internships and full-time roles. Those programs are selective, but they create a clear path and a strong alumni network in major finance hubs like Chicago and New York.

Another difference is employer visibility. Kelley tends to attract broader national finance recruiting, while Michigan State’s outcomes are often stronger in regional corporate recruiting and general business placement. That does not mean MSU students cannot reach banking or strong finance jobs, but the process is usually less built-in and may require more self-navigation compared with Indiana.

For corporate finance roles, both schools can work well, especially if you perform strongly, get involved early, and build internship experience. But if the question is which school is more powerful specifically for finance recruiting, Indiana is the clearer answer because of Kelley’s brand, alumni reach, and more developed pipeline into competitive finance roles.
