University of Rochester vs George Washington University for internships: which has better opportunities and access?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location versus campus-based support. George Washington gives you much easier access to internships during the school year because it sits in Washington, DC, where students can get to government, policy, nonprofit, media, consulting, and health-related roles without leaving campus life behind. Rochester offers strong advising and research opportunities, but its city does not provide the same volume of in-semester internship options, so students often lean more on summer internships, campus jobs, and faculty-connected experiences.

For school-year internships, GW has the clearer advantage. Being in DC matters a lot because many employers there expect part-time student interns and are set up around the academic calendar.

Rochester can still be excellent for pre-professional experience, especially if you are interested in research, engineering, healthcare, data-focused work, or lab-based opportunities. The University of Rochester Medical Center, strong science infrastructure, and faculty access can create meaningful experience, but it often looks more like research assistant work, clinical exposure, or summer internships rather than constant off-campus internship traffic during the semester.

For summers, both schools can place students well, but GW’s location also helps with networking and employer familiarity. Students can build relationships in DC during the year that turn into summer roles, and the university’s political and policy ecosystem is especially useful. Rochester students absolutely do land strong summer internships too, but they may need to be more intentional about applying nationally rather than relying on local access.

If internships during the academic year are a major priority, especially across government, nonprofit, policy, media, or business-adjacent fields, GW has the more immediate and convenient setup. Rochester becomes more compelling if you value a more traditional campus environment and are happy with a path that may center more on research, healthcare, or summer-based experience building.
