How difficult are admissions at Case Western and UChicago compared with each other?

UChicago is much harder to get into than Case Western, and the gap is not small. In practice, most applicants should treat UChicago as a high-reach school, while Case Western is selective but meaningfully more attainable. That difference shows up in how each school reads applications, the level of academic competition in the pool, and how much application strategy can matter.

UChicago attracts one of the most academically intense applicant pools in the country. It draws large numbers of students with top grades, very rigorous coursework, and strong testing, plus many applicants who are specifically excited by its Core Curriculum and distinctive intellectual culture. That means even students with excellent numbers are far from assured there.

Case Western is also selective and expects strong academics, especially in challenging courses, but its applicant pool is broader and the admissions bar is not as extreme. It is especially popular for engineering, pre-med, nursing, and STEM-related paths, so those areas can still be competitive, but the school is not operating at the same level of admissions difficulty as UChicago.

For list-building, it makes sense to categorize UChicago as a reach for nearly everyone and Case Western as anywhere from a reach to a target depending on your grades, course rigor, testing, and intended major. They should not be treated as admissions equals.
