George Washington vs UVA for finance careers: which is better for recruiting and internships?

I’m trying to decide between George Washington and UVA and want to focus on finance. I know both can lead to good outcomes, but I’m mostly interested in which school has stronger recruiting, networking, and internship access for finance jobs.

I’m a current high school senior and want to make the choice that gives me the best shot at breaking into finance after college.

UVA has the clearer edge for finance careers. Its McIntire School of Commerce is much more established in finance recruiting, it has a stronger alumni presence on Wall Street and in major finance hubs, and it is more consistently treated by employers as a core target or semi-target for competitive finance roles.

The biggest differentiator is structured recruiting access. At UVA, students interested in investment banking, asset management, sales and trading, and related fields benefit from a very organized pipeline through McIntire, student finance clubs, and alumni mentorship. That matters because a lot of finance hiring, especially for internships, happens early and rewards schools where firms already know the training and talent level they can expect.

The second advantage is network depth. UVA’s alumni base in high finance is broader and more visible, particularly in New York, Charlotte, and other finance centers. When students are trying to land sophomore and junior-year internships, that alumni presence often translates into more coffee chats, resume pulls, interview prep, and referrals.

Location helps GW, but not enough to outweigh the recruiting difference. Being in DC can make semester internships easier, and GW can be a solid option for roles in economic consulting, policy-related finance, public finance, or regulatory spaces. But for the most sought-after undergraduate finance tracks, UVA tends to open more doors and requires less self-navigation to get in front of the right employers.

One caveat is that UVA students usually apply into McIntire after enrolling, so you should understand that process clearly.
