Is American University or Syracuse better for D.C. internships?

The biggest practical difference is access during the school year: American students are already in Washington, so they can intern in D.C. part time while taking classes, while Syracuse students usually need to rely more on summers, a semester away, or a specific D.C. program. That matters because many policy, nonprofit, communications, and government internships are built around being available in person during the week. American also has a campus culture where D.C. internships are woven into the normal undergraduate experience, not treated as a special add-on.

For real experience during college, American has the clearer edge. Its location in northwest D.C. makes it much easier to build a resume steadily across multiple semesters, attend events on short notice, and turn one contact into another. For students interested in politics, international affairs, public policy, journalism, advocacy, or think tanks, that proximity is a real advantage because networking in D.C. often happens through repeated in-person exposure.

Syracuse can still get students to D.C., especially through alumni connections and programs like the D.C. semester. But the path is less embedded in everyday campus life because you are not physically there most of the year. That usually means fewer spontaneous opportunities and less flexibility to take on internships during a regular semester.

If your main question is which school is more useful for landing and stacking D.C. experience while still enrolled, American is the stronger choice. Syracuse is absolutely viable for D.C. work, but American gives you the more direct, consistent, and practical setup for internships and connection-building throughout college.
