Is American University or Boston College better for finance careers?

I'm trying to decide between these two schools and finance is the main career path I want to pursue. Both seem solid academically, but I want to understand which one tends to be better for finance recruiting, networking, and getting internships.

I’m mainly looking at the overall reputation for finance and how helpful the school is for breaking into the field after college.

The biggest practical tradeoff is location versus recruiting power: American University puts you in Washington, DC with easy access to internships during the school year, while Boston College has a much stronger built-in pipeline for traditional finance recruiting. For finance specifically, Boston College is usually the more advantageous option because its business program, alumni network, and employer recognition are more established in investment banking, asset management, corporate finance, and related paths. American can still work well, especially for students interested in policy-connected finance, economics, or government-facing roles, but it does not carry the same finance-specific pull.

American University is better positioned geographically for semester-time internships, and DC can be excellent for internships tied to economic policy, consulting, public finance, fintech-adjacent work, and regulatory institutions. But DC is not as concentrated for classic undergraduate finance recruiting as Boston and New York. If your goal is front-office finance or a more traditional Wall Street track, you will usually have to be more self-directed from American.

In terms of overall reputation for finance careers after college, Boston College has the clearer edge. It tends to offer the stronger brand signal to finance employers and the more reliable alumni traction in the field. Unless there is a major cost difference or you strongly prefer DC for a policy-oriented version of finance, Boston College is the better choice for finance recruiting, networking, and launching into the industry.
