Which has better campus life, American University or George Washington University?
I’m trying to decide between American and GW, and academics aside, campus life is a big factor for me. I want to get a sense of which school feels more social and active day to day.
I’m mostly wondering about the overall campus vibe, student activities, and whether the social scene feels more connected or more spread out.

American University tends to have the stronger campus-life feel if you want a more traditional, connected day-to-day student experience. Its campus in Tenleytown is more self-contained, students are more likely to live and spend time in the same area, and that usually makes clubs, events, and casual socializing feel easier to stumble into. GW is active too, but its Foggy Bottom setting blends much more into the city, so campus life can feel more decentralized.
One major difference is physical layout. American has a defined campus with quads, residence halls, and student spaces that make it feel like students are part of one shared environment. At GW, you are in downtown D.C., which is exciting, but the university feels woven into the surrounding city blocks rather than set apart from them. That often creates a more independent rhythm, where students scatter for internships, restaurants, and off-campus plans.
American also tends to feel more residential. More of the social energy happens on or near campus, which can make it easier to build routines around dining halls, student events, and seeing the same people regularly. At GW, a lot of student life exists, but it is often less concentrated because students take advantage of the city itself as their social space.
For student activities, both schools have plenty of clubs, political organizations, and access to D.C. opportunities. The difference is how those activities feel in practice: at American, campus programming often feels like the center of student life, while at GW, student life competes more with the attractions and responsibilities of the city.
