How do UNC and Virginia Tech compare in admissions difficulty overall?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UNC is typically much harder to get into overall, while Virginia Tech is selective but usually more accessible for a broader range of strong applicants. UNC Chapel Hill has a more restrictive admissions process, especially for students applying from out of state, because as a North Carolina public university it limits how many nonresident students it can enroll. Virginia Tech is also a well-regarded public university with plenty of demand, but in broad admissions difficulty it usually sits a step below UNC.

For an in-state North Carolina student, UNC is still very competitive, just less extreme than it is for out-of-state applicants. For an out-of-state student, the gap becomes more noticeable: UNC is one of those public flagships where residency matters a lot, whereas Virginia Tech, while still caring about residency, does not have the same reputation for being quite as difficult overall.

In terms of what this means for building a list, UNC is better treated as a reach or at least a higher-risk target for most applicants unless your academic profile is especially strong. Virginia Tech is often more realistic for students with solid grades and coursework, though some majors there can be more competitive than the university overall.
