University of New Hampshire vs University of Maryland for internship opportunities

The biggest practical tradeoff is location and employer density versus a more traditional college-town environment. University of Maryland has a clear edge for internships because it sits near Washington, DC, with access to federal agencies, nonprofits, research labs, contractors, startups, and major companies in the DMV corridor. UNH can still provide solid internships, especially in New England and for students in certain majors, but the nearby employer network is smaller and students often need to be more intentional about looking beyond campus.

At Maryland, proximity matters a lot. Students can reach internships during the semester more easily, not just in the summer, and that tends to widen the range of experiences available. The school also benefits from strong connections in government, public policy, computer science, engineering, business, and research-heavy fields because of the surrounding region.

UNH has real strengths too, especially if you want a close-knit campus and are interested in areas tied to environmental science, marine science, business, education, or regional industries in New Hampshire and greater Boston. But compared with Maryland, internship access is usually less built into the geography. For many students, that means more dependence on summer internships, networking, and traveling to larger markets.

In terms of school-supported access, Maryland’s size and location usually create more frequent employer events, alumni connections, and semester-time opportunities. UNH can still work well if you are proactive, but Maryland makes the process easier for a broader range of majors.
