Purdue vs UC San Diego for college value: which is the better investment for a STEM major?

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost versus location advantage: Purdue is often the stronger value on price for STEM, while UC San Diego can justify a higher cost for some students because of its access to Southern California research, biotech, engineering, and tech opportunities. Both schools have serious STEM credibility, large recruiting pipelines, and strong research ecosystems, so this is less about whether one is respected and more about how much extra you would be paying for UCSD’s setting. For many students, especially if Purdue is materially cheaper, Purdue comes out ahead on return per dollar.

Purdue has a long-established reputation in engineering, computer science, and other technical fields, and employers know how to recruit there at scale. It tends to offer a very direct value proposition: strong academics, a large alumni network in industry, and solid placement into internships and full-time roles without requiring a coastal price tag. If you are paying in-state or getting a favorable net price, Purdue is hard to beat as an investment.

UC San Diego is excellent in STEM as well, especially in areas connected to research, biotech, data, and industry partnerships in the San Diego region. Its location can matter a lot because being near research institutes, startups, and established science and tech employers can make networking and in-semester opportunities easier.

On job outcomes, both schools can lead to strong results, but the gap is usually not large enough to justify a major price premium on name alone. On internship access, UCSD may have an edge in nearby opportunities during the school year, while Purdue’s employer pipeline is extremely robust and often more than enough for students who actively use career fairs and recruiting resources.

My honest take is that Purdue is usually the better investment for a STEM major when the price difference is significant. UC San Diego becomes the smarter buy only when the cost is close enough, or when you know you want to build your college experience around Southern California research and industry access in a way that you will actually use.
