Richmond has a solid academic reputation, but its prestige is more tied to being a selective liberal arts–oriented university than to national brand power across industries.

One big differentiator is breadth of recognition. Purdue is a major research university with nationally visible programs and a very large alumni network, so its name is more likely to be immediately recognized by recruiters, faculty, and grad admissions readers across the country. That matters most in fields where school reputation is closely linked to program strength, particularly STEM and some business areas.

Another difference is the type of prestige each school has. Richmond’s reputation is stronger in smaller-class undergraduate education, close faculty attention, and a polished private-school feel. In certain circles, especially on the East Coast and in finance, consulting, law, or politics-adjacent environments, Richmond can be viewed very favorably. But that is different from broad, nationwide name recognition.

For grad school admissions, the college name itself matters less than your GPA, recommendations, research, internships, and course rigor. Still, Purdue may give you a clearer edge where the program itself is widely known, while Richmond can still place students very well if they take advantage of faculty mentorship and strong academic performance.

So in pure general prestige and public recognition, Purdue has the stronger brand. Richmond is respected, selective, and well regarded, but it does not usually carry the same across-the-board national weight.
