Purdue vs Carnegie Mellon for prestige: which is viewed more highly by employers and grad schools?

Carnegie Mellon is usually viewed as having the stronger overall prestige, especially by employers and graduate programs outside of a few Purdue-dominant fields.

For employer perception, Carnegie Mellon tends to stand out more nationally, particularly in tech, quantitative fields, robotics, AI, and consulting. Purdue also has excellent employer recognition, but that recognition is most powerful in engineering, aerospace, manufacturing, and other applied technical areas where Purdue has a long-established reputation and very large alumni presence.

For grad school admissions, Carnegie Mellon again has the edge in broad name recognition and research prestige. Purdue is still highly respected by graduate programs, especially in engineering and STEM, and a strong Purdue student can absolutely place into top grad schools, but the school’s brand is usually seen as more field-specific than CMU’s.

The main exception is that in some engineering circles, Purdue is every bit as respected and may even be more familiar because of its scale, industry ties, and deep alumni network. So if the question is pure overall prestige, CMU comes out ahead. If the question is targeted credibility in certain engineering sectors, the gap narrows quite a bit and can sometimes disappear.
