For early, hands-on undergraduate research access, Purdue often feels more straightforward. UCLA absolutely has enormous research depth and world-class labs, but because it is larger, more decentralized, and tied to a major academic medical and graduate research environment, getting in early can sometimes require more persistence and networking.

Purdue tends to suit the student who wants a clearer path to joining a project in the first year or soon after. The upside is that the range of research is huge, from life sciences and medicine to social sciences, public policy, and the arts, and being in Los Angeles can also open doors to hospitals, institutes, and outside partnerships. But the scale can make the process less uniform, so your experience may depend a lot on your department, how early you start emailing, and how well you navigate faculty labs and research centers.

If your priority is accessibility rather than just prestige, Purdue probably has the edge. If your priority is breadth and you are ready to hustle for a spot in a very expansive research ecosystem, UCLA can be excellent, but it may not feel as immediately open to every undergraduate.
