Which is more prestigious for engineering: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Carnegie Mellon University?

The biggest practical tradeoff is breadth versus brand concentration: UIUC has one of the deepest and most widely recognized engineering ecosystems in the country across many disciplines, while Carnegie Mellon carries a very powerful name in certain engineering-adjacent areas, especially computer science, robotics, and tech-heavy interdisciplinary work. In engineering circles, both are unquestionably top-tier. The difference is less about one being respected and the other not, and more about where that prestige is strongest and how people talk about it.

For traditional engineering reputation, UIUC is often seen as a true heavyweight. Its College of Engineering is enormous, historically established, and especially well known in fields like mechanical, civil, electrical, computer, aerospace, and materials engineering. Employers, grad schools, and other engineers are very used to seeing UIUC as a major producer of engineering talent.

Carnegie Mellon has exceptional prestige too, but its reputation is often most intense in areas tied to computing, robotics, AI, systems, and the overlap between engineering and computer science.

So if the question is broad engineering prestige, UIUC probably has the edge in sheer scale, legacy, and across-the-board engineering recognition. If the comparison is specifically around computing-driven engineering fields, CMU can match or even surpass that perception depending on the specialty.

For a realistic college list, the more important takeaway is that both are viewed as top destinations for engineering, and neither will be seen as a weak choice by anyone knowledgeable. For engineering overall, UIUC is at least as prestigious and arguably more so; for CS-linked and robotics-heavy prestige, CMU often stands out more.
