Which is better for marine biology: University of Hawaii or San Diego State?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: the University of Hawaii gives you much deeper, more direct access to marine science as an undergraduate, while San Diego State can offer a strong biology experience but is less centered on marine biology itself. At UH, marine biology is closely tied to the school’s identity, its island location, and its research infrastructure in the Pacific. SDSU benefits from being near the coast and in a major science hub, but marine biology is not as central to the university’s academic profile.

For undergraduate marine biology specifically, University of Hawaii is the stronger option. UH has a long-established reputation in ocean and marine sciences, and students benefit from proximity to coral reef systems, tropical marine ecosystems, and fieldwork opportunities that are hard to match on the mainland. That matters because marine biology is one of those fields where location is not just a nice extra, it directly shapes the courses, labs, and research you can access.

SDSU is still a credible choice if you want a broader biology education in Southern California and the flexibility of a large public university with good science opportunities. You would likely need to be more proactive there about finding marine-focused research, internships, or nearby partnerships, whereas at UH the marine environment is much more built into the academic experience. For a student who already knows marine biology is the main goal, that difference is pretty important.

If marine biology is the priority rather than just a possible interest, I would lean University of Hawaii. It is more distinctive in this area, more immersed in marine science, and more likely to give you the kind of undergraduate experience that feels specifically designed around the field rather than adjacent to it.
