Is University of Hawaii or University of Washington better for undergraduate research opportunities?

I’m trying to compare these two schools mainly for research as a college student, not just overall ranking. I’m interested in how easy it is to get involved in labs or research projects as an undergrad.

I want to understand which one tends to have stronger research opportunities and more access for students like me.

University of Washington has the stronger overall undergraduate research environment. It is a major research university with a much larger volume of funded labs, centers, and faculty projects across engineering, computer science, biology, public health, social sciences, and more. For an undergraduate who wants lots of options and a deep research infrastructure, UW offers more sheer opportunity.

One concrete advantage is scale. UW has a very broad research ecosystem tied to a large academic medical center and well-established undergraduate research support through its Office of Undergraduate Research. That means more labs recruiting students, more structured programs, and more chances to find work during the school year or summer in many different fields.

Another differentiator is field breadth. If your interests might shift, UW makes that easier because strong research exists across a wider range of departments. At Hawaii, research can be excellent, especially in oceanography, marine biology, astronomy, volcanology, climate, Asian and Pacific studies, and other areas connected to the islands and the Pacific region. In those niches, Hawaii can be especially distinctive.

The tradeoff is access. At a place like UW, there are more labs, but there is also more competition, especially in popular STEM departments. University of Hawaii may sometimes feel more approachable on a lab-by-lab basis because it is smaller and certain faculty areas are tightly connected to local geography and regional issues. Still, when comparing total undergraduate research opportunities and institutional research strength, UW comes out ahead.
