Is UVA or Washington University in St. Louis worth it for college?

The biggest practical tradeoff is public flagship value and school spirit at UVA versus private-school resources and a more polished, pre-professional environment at WashU. UVA usually stands out for lower cost if you are a Virginia resident, a classic college-town experience in Charlottesville, and especially strong pipelines in areas like commerce, public policy, economics, and law-related paths. WashU tends to stand out for smaller-scale advising, strong support in pre-med and research, and a campus culture that often feels more residential and academically curated.

Whether either school is “worth it” usually comes down to three things: net price, academic fit, and the kind of student life you want for four years. For many in-state students, UVA is one of the clearest values in highly selective higher education because you can get a nationally respected degree at a much lower price than most private universities. For an out-of-state student, that value case gets less automatic, and WashU can become more competitive if its financial aid package is better.

Academically, both are excellent, but they feel different. UVA has the energy and breadth of a major public university, with more visible school spirit, larger intro classes in some areas, and a strong alumni network, especially on the East Coast. WashU often appeals to students who want closer faculty access, a more contained campus community, and especially robust opportunities in research, health fields, and interdisciplinary study.

Students also judge “worth it” by outcomes relative to debt. If one option would require heavy borrowing, that can outweigh prestige pretty quickly, especially since both schools open plenty of doors. A useful way to think about it is not whether the name is impressive, but whether the school gives you the major options, support, and career access you want at a price that leaves you flexible after graduation.

In many real cases, UVA is the better value for Virginia residents, while WashU becomes more compelling when its aid is strong and you want the smaller private-university experience it does particularly well.
