Is the University of Michigan or USC better for entertainment careers?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools and I’m interested in working in entertainment after college. I know both are strong names, but I’m not sure which one has the better path for getting into film, TV, music, or related jobs.

I’m mainly looking at which school would be better for building connections and finding opportunities in the industry.

For entertainment careers, USC usually gives the more direct path. Its location in Los Angeles, the strength of the School of Cinematic Arts, Thornton, and its deep ties to film, TV, music, and media companies make it especially powerful for internships, part-time industry work, and alumni connections while you are still in school.

USC fits the student who wants to be close to the industry from day one. If you want to spend the academic year meeting people in studios, production companies, agencies, labels, or creator-focused media spaces, USC makes that much easier because the network is physically nearby. That matters in entertainment, where informal connections, short internships, assistant roles, and being available for in-person opportunities can open doors quickly.

It is especially attractive for students who already know they want film, television, screenwriting, production, entertainment business, music industry work, or related creative fields. USC’s alumni network in Hollywood is real and visible, and the campus culture includes a lot of students actively aiming for those careers, which can help with peer collaboration too.

Michigan makes more sense for the student who wants a broader traditional college experience first and may be interested in entertainment but not locked into one lane yet. Michigan has a strong overall reputation, excellent academics, and solid arts resources, and it can absolutely lead to entertainment careers, especially through alumni networks in media, business, communications, and the arts. But the route is usually less immediate and often depends more on summers, extra networking, and eventually moving to New York or Los Angeles.

For music, the answer depends a little on what side of the industry you mean. USC is especially useful for commercial music, scoring, music industry, and entertainment-adjacent careers because of LA access. Michigan can be compelling for a student more focused on a classic university environment with strong music and performing arts training, but it is not as naturally plugged into the entertainment business itself.

If your main priority is building connections and finding industry-facing opportunities during college, USC has the edge quite clearly. Michigan is a great option for someone who wants more flexibility, a different campus feel, or a less entertainment-centered undergraduate experience before entering the field later.
