University of Washington vs George Washington for city life: which feels more urban for a student?

The biggest practical difference is that George Washington feels embedded in the city from the moment you walk out of class, while the University of Washington gives you access to a major city but from a more defined campus environment. GW is in central Washington, DC, near government buildings, museums, Metro stops, restaurants, and dense walkable neighborhoods. UW is in Seattle and has strong transit access, but campus itself feels more like a traditional university district separated from downtown life.

For daily urban experience, GW is the more immersive option. Its Foggy Bottom location means you are surrounded by city streets, apartment buildings, offices, and transit as part of ordinary student life. You can get around DC very easily without a car, and the Metro makes it simple to reach other neighborhoods quickly.

UW still offers a very city-connected lifestyle, especially compared with suburban campuses. Seattle light rail serves the university area well, and neighborhoods near campus like the University District give you plenty of food, shops, and activity. But the feel is more campus-centered and neighborhood-based than constantly urban in the way GW is.

If what you want is a true live-in-the-city student experience where the campus blends into downtown and public transit is part of everyday life, George Washington has the edge. University of Washington is excellent for students who want a real campus with easy access to a major city, but it does not feel as intensely urban on a day-to-day basis.
