One big reason is breadth. Michigan is viewed as elite across a wide range of undergraduate areas, including engineering, business, social sciences, and the humanities, while Purdue’s reputation is especially concentrated in engineering, aviation, and some technical fields. If someone is speaking generally and not by major, Michigan’s name usually lands at a higher level.

Another difference is how each school is talked about outside the Midwest. Michigan has a very strong national and international brand. Purdue is highly respected and very well known, but its reputation is more likely to be described as excellent in specific strengths rather than uniformly top-tier across the board.

That said, Purdue is absolutely not a weak option, and in certain undergraduate programs, especially engineering, it can be just as respected or even preferred depending on the employer or field. But for pure overall prestige, independent of major, Michigan is the name that tends to carry more weight.
