Purdue vs UC Berkeley: which is better value for college cost and career outcomes?
I’m trying to compare these two schools from a value standpoint, not just reputation. Purdue seems much more affordable, but UC Berkeley has a bigger name and strong job prospects.
I’m mainly trying to understand how people think about return on investment when one school costs a lot less and the other may have stronger national recognition.

Purdue is usually the better value if cost is meaningfully lower for you, especially for engineering, CS, and other technical fields where Purdue has very strong employer recognition and recruiting. Berkeley can justify the higher price in some cases because of its location, brand reach, and access to West Coast tech, finance, and research opportunities, but that premium is not automatically worth it. For return on investment, the key question is whether Berkeley’s extra cost would actually translate into opportunities you would use that Purdue would not give you.
The biggest differentiator is price relative to likely earnings. Purdue is widely known for offering a strong academic reputation at a lower cost than many peer schools, and keeping debt down matters more for ROI than small differences in prestige. If Berkeley would require substantially more borrowing, Purdue often comes out ahead because graduating with less debt gives you more flexibility on jobs, grad school, and early career choices.
The next differentiator is recruiting ecosystem. Berkeley has exceptional access to Bay Area internships, startups, labs, and alumni networks, which can be especially valuable for students targeting Silicon Valley, certain finance paths, or research-heavy careers. Purdue also has excellent recruiting, particularly in engineering and industry-facing roles, but Berkeley’s location and network can create more high-density opportunity during the school year, not just in summer.
A third difference is how much the school name changes outcomes in your field. In engineering and CS, Purdue’s name already carries plenty of weight, so the gap in career outcomes is often smaller than people assume. Berkeley’s brand may stretch further across industries and internationally, but in many technical hiring contexts, skills, internships, and project experience matter more than the marginal boost from choosing Berkeley over Purdue.
So in practical ROI terms, Purdue wins when the cost gap is large. Berkeley becomes more compelling when the price difference is manageable for your family and you know you want to take advantage of the specific ecosystem around the school.
