What is the party scene like at Bucknell compared with UMass Amherst?
I’m trying to get a feel for the social life at these two schools because that matters a lot to me when I’m choosing where to apply. I know both have different reputations, but I’m not sure what day-to-day weekends are actually like for students.
I’m mainly looking for a general comparison of how active the party scene is and what the social atmosphere feels like at each school.

UMass Amherst has the bigger, more active, and more varied party scene, while Bucknell’s social life is more concentrated and shaped by a smaller campus community. At UMass, the sheer size of the student body creates more going on every weekend, with a mix of dorm gatherings, off-campus parties, bars in the area for students of age, and plenty of non-party events. Bucknell is social too, but because it is smaller and more residential, the scene can feel tighter and more repetitive from weekend to weekend.
One major difference is scale. UMass Amherst has a large public-university energy, so there are usually more people, more friend groups, and more types of nightlife happening at once. That means students who are social but not locked into one scene often find it easier to bounce between options. Bucknell’s campus is much smaller, so social life can feel more everyone-knows-everyone, which some students like, but it also means the party scene is less anonymous and less expansive.
Another differentiator is how much Greek life shapes the weekend. At Bucknell, Greek life has historically played a pretty visible role in social life, so parties can feel more centered around that structure. Even students who are not in fraternities or sororities may feel its influence on where people go and who is hosting. At UMass Amherst, Greek life exists but is less likely to define the overall social atmosphere because the university is so large and there are more parallel scenes.
The day-to-day feel is different too. UMass tends to offer more variety, including student org events, campus programming, athletics, concerts, and a broader off-campus environment, so weekends do not revolve around one social channel. Bucknell often feels more self-contained, which can make campus social life close-knit and lively, but also more limited if you want constant new options.
