Bucknell vs Tufts for a biology major: how do they compare for undergraduate biology?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and research intensity versus a more intimate undergraduate environment. Tufts gives you access to a broader research ecosystem, including connections to Boston-area hospitals, labs, and biomedical institutions, while Bucknell is more centered on undergraduates and is less likely to feel sprawling or impersonal. For biology specifically, both can prepare you well, but they do it in noticeably different ways.

Academically, Tufts tends to offer a wider range of upper-level biology options and more depth in areas tied to biomedical science, neuroscience-adjacent work, and interdisciplinary study. Its location also makes it easier to plug into off-campus science opportunities during the school year. Bucknell’s biology program is strong in a more classic liberal arts setting, with close faculty access, small classes, and a campus culture where undergrads are very much the priority.

For research, Tufts likely has the edge in sheer volume and variety. Being near major medical and research centers matters, and students can benefit from that network.
