Is University of San Francisco or UC Davis better for pre-vet?

UC Davis is the better choice for pre-vet. It has one of the most established animal science and veterinary ecosystems in the country, including a veterinary school on campus, extensive animal facilities, and far more direct exposure to research, livestock, equine, and companion animal settings than USF can offer.

The biggest difference is access to animal-related academics and hands-on experience. At Davis, you can study Animal Science and related fields in a way that lines up naturally with vet school preparation, and the campus has built-in connections to clinics, labs, barns, teaching herds, and faculty doing animal health research. At USF, you can complete pre-vet prerequisites through biology or related sciences, but the university itself is not centered on animal science, so you would likely need to work harder to assemble equivalent experiences off campus.

Another concrete advantage is advising and peer community. UC Davis has a long track record of students pursuing veterinary medicine, which usually means more targeted pre-vet advising, more classmates on the same path, and more student organizations tied to animal care and veterinary interests. That matters because vet school applicants need not just grades, but also sustained veterinary, animal, and research experience.

Location and surrounding opportunities also favor Davis for this goal. The Davis area and broader region offer easier access to farms, equine work, shelters, wildlife, and agricultural settings that are especially useful if you want broad animal exposure. USF’s San Francisco location can be good for healthcare and urban biology opportunities, but it is less naturally set up for the range of animal handling experiences that many pre-vet students need.

Cost can matter too. If UC Davis is significantly more affordable for you, that strengthens the case even more, since vet school is expensive and minimizing undergrad debt is smart.
