Is University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Villanova better for finance students?

I’m a high school senior trying to compare these two schools for a finance major. I keep seeing both names come up, but I’m not sure which one tends to be stronger for finance overall.

I’m mainly trying to understand which school would be better for building a career in finance after college.

For finance, UIUC usually has the stronger overall edge if you want a bigger recruiting market, more scale, and access to a very well-known business school. Gies College of Business has a strong reputation, a large alumni base, and broad employer pipelines, especially for corporate finance, accounting-related paths, consulting-adjacent roles, and many finance jobs in Chicago. Villanova is also very respected, but its finance outcomes tend to shine most for students who want a more personal, East Coast-oriented experience and who will really use its tight alumni network.

UIUC fits the student who wants a large, high-energy campus with lots of business peers, many student organizations, and the chance to explore several finance-related lanes before narrowing in. That environment can be excellent for someone aiming at investment banking, asset management, corporate finance, or fintech because there are simply so many clubs, competitions, and recruiting touchpoints. The tradeoff is that you need to be proactive, since a big campus rewards students who seek out opportunities rather than wait for them.

Villanova fits the student who wants a smaller, more structured setting where faculty access and community can feel more immediate. The Villanova School of Business has a strong reputation, and its location near Philadelphia helps with internships and alumni access along the Northeast corridor, including New York. For a student who values mentorship, smaller classes, and a polished pre-professional culture, Villanova can be a very effective launch point into finance.

If the question is which school is stronger for finance overall, I would give UIUC the nod because of Gies’s scale, visibility, and reach across finance recruiting. If the question is where a student might build a finance career most effectively on a personal level, Villanova becomes very compelling for someone who will thrive in a smaller private-school environment and wants to tap deeply into East Coast connections.
