University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs Cornell for accounting careers: which is better for recruiting and job placement?

The biggest practical tradeoff is breadth and depth of accounting recruiting at UIUC versus the broader Ivy brand and smaller accounting footprint at Cornell. If your goal is specifically accounting internships and entry-level placement, UIUC usually has the more direct pipeline.

UIUC has a long-standing reputation with Big Four and other major firms, a large accounting student community, and a campus recruiting structure built around accounting as a major destination. That matters because accounting hiring is often very system-driven: firms return to the same schools, interview many students at once, and hire in volume. For accounting, UIUC tends to benefit from exactly that kind of recruiting ecosystem.

Cornell is absolutely respected by employers, and the Cornell name can open doors broadly across business fields. But Cornell is not usually the first school people point to for undergraduate accounting recruiting in the same way they do for UIUC. You can still reach strong accounting outcomes there, especially if you are proactive, but the pipeline is not as central to the school’s identity.

Another practical difference is target market visibility. UIUC has especially strong ties to major Midwest offices, including Chicago, while also placing students nationally.

So if the question is narrowed to accounting recruiting, internships, and first-job placement, I’d give the edge to UIUC. Cornell may carry more all-purpose prestige, but for getting started in accounting specifically, UIUC is the school with the more proven and specialized recruiting machine.
