How selective are the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the University of Wisconsin compared with each other?

I’m a junior trying to build a realistic college list, and these two schools keep coming up for me. I know both are competitive, but I’m trying to understand which one is generally more selective overall.

I’m mainly looking for a simple comparison of how hard each school is to get into.

The biggest practical difference is that UIUC can feel more selective in a major-dependent way, while UW–Madison is often a bit more consistent at the overall university level. In plain terms, both are competitive public flagships, but UIUC is often harder to get into for certain high-demand programs, especially engineering, computer science, and business-related paths. Wisconsin is also selective, but the admit difficulty is usually less sharply tied to specific majors in the same way people talk about UIUC.

If you are asking for a simple overall comparison, they are fairly close, with UIUC often perceived as slightly tougher in its most sought-after programs. For students applying to less impacted majors, the gap may not feel very large. For students targeting fields where UIUC has an especially strong national reputation, admissions can be noticeably tougher there.

Another factor is residency. Both schools tend to be more accessible for in-state applicants than for out-of-state applicants, and that can affect how selective they feel in practice. Your experience applying to one versus the other may depend as much on your intended major and residency status as on the university’s overall selectivity.

So if the question is simply which is harder to get into overall, the cleanest answer is that they are in a similar tier, but UIUC often edges more selective, especially in popular direct-admit programs. UW–Madison is absolutely not an easy admit, but it is usually seen as a little less intense than UIUC at the top end of program-specific admissions.
