Which is better for biology: University of Washington or Penn State?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Washington gives you access to a more research-heavy, biomedical environment in Seattle, while Penn State offers a large, well-resourced biology experience with a more traditional college-town setting and somewhat less pressure around major access. For biology specifically, UW is often seen as the stronger name because of its ties to major medical, public health, and life sciences research. Penn State is still a solid option, but UW tends to stand out more if you want to be close to cutting-edge lab work, hospitals, and biotech-adjacent opportunities.

At UW, biology students benefit from the school’s broader life sciences ecosystem, including strong connections to medicine, global health, environmental science, and genetics. Being in Seattle matters here: the university is embedded in a city with major research activity, which can translate into more relevant internships, labs, and clinical exposure.
