University of Washington vs UC San Diego for machine learning: which is better?

I’m a high school student trying to compare these two schools for machine learning. I know both have strong computer science programs, but I’m trying to figure out which one is generally considered the better choice if I want to study machine learning and build experience in that area.

I’m mostly looking for a comparison of the overall strength of the program and opportunities related to machine learning, not just general rankings.

University of Washington has the edge for machine learning. Its computer science program has a particularly strong reputation in AI and ML, Seattle gives you unusually close access to major tech and research employers, and UW’s research ecosystem in computing is one of the clearest advantages between these two options.

One practical issue matters too: access to the major can shape everything. At both schools, computer science can be difficult to enter, but UW is especially known for this concern depending on how you are admitted.

So in terms of pure machine learning strength and surrounding opportunities, UW is the stronger name here, with the important caveat that direct access to CS is crucial.
