UC Davis or Michigan State: which is the better value for college?

Michigan State is a large, well-resourced Big Ten university with strong school spirit, broad academic offerings, and a solid alumni network, but for many students the sticker price is what decides the value question.

For in-state Californians, UC Davis is usually the better value. You get a respected UC degree, strong research opportunities, and access to recruiting pipelines tied to Northern California and the wider West Coast. Davis also has particularly strong reputations in areas like animal science, agriculture, environmental science, food science, and health-related tracks.

For Michigan residents, Michigan State often makes more financial sense than paying out-of-state UC costs. It has excellent breadth, a classic residential college experience, and strong programs in business, education, communication, supply chain, and agriculture. Its campus resources and alumni base are substantial enough that a student who is proactive can get very good outcomes there.

If both schools would cost roughly the same, UC Davis usually has the edge in value because of its academic reputation, UC system name, and California-based opportunities. That said, value is not just prestige per dollar. Michigan State can absolutely be the smarter buy if it offers significantly lower net cost, honors perks, or merit aid, because graduating with less debt often matters more than small differences in reputation.

So the cleanest way to think about it is this: compare net price first, not published tuition, then weigh that against your likely major and where you want to work after college. In a true general comparison with similar cost, I would lean UC Davis. In a real-life comparison where Michigan State is meaningfully cheaper, Michigan State can very easily be the better value.
