Is UVA or Columbia better for internships?

Columbia has the edge for internships overall, especially during the school year. Being in New York City makes it much easier to take on part-time internships in finance, media, tech, nonprofits, publishing, startups, consulting, and research without needing to leave campus for a whole semester. That kind of proximity matters because students can build experience continuously, not just over the summer.

Columbia also benefits from a dense alumni and employer network that is heavily concentrated in the city. Employers often recruit there because they can reach students quickly for semester-time roles, informational interviews, and short-term projects. For fields where networking and repeated exposure matter, that access is a real advantage.

UVA still offers strong internship outcomes. Students do well in summer internships, and the university has excellent employer connections, especially in consulting, finance, government, and business. But Charlottesville is not the same kind of day-to-day internship market as Manhattan, so during the academic year many UVA students rely more on summers, school breaks, or internships in Northern Virginia, Richmond, or D.C.

Another difference is convenience. At Columbia, a student can often interview in person, commute to an office, and keep an internship going alongside classes. At UVA, strong opportunities are absolutely there, but they more often require extra planning, travel, or relocation.

If your main criterion is easiest overall access to internships, especially while classes are in session, Columbia comes out ahead.
